CHAPTER 16

LUZ

Luuuuuuz! Did you hear Tanner got fired from his new gig???

Luz straightened from a slump over her desk and glanced around to be sure none of her colleagues were watching her check her phone. A silly reaction, of course. It was leftover guilt from when she’d been lower on the ladder, and that was amplified by her permanent curse of being a perfectionist.

The text had come from Eddie on the second floor. He worked in accounting but was stationed very close to the door of their HR manager, and that woman did not have an indoor voice. Loud talking was quite a quality in an HR professional. Luz shuddered to think what might have been said about her own situation behind that thin door.

What??? she texted back. What happened? Then she stared for an eternity, waiting for him to see her question and respond, but the message stayed unread.

Her knees bounced with nervousness as she waited. She’d had absolutely no indication her plan in the system was moving forward.

Was it possible Tanner had been fired for being an asshole and not because she’d set him up? The odds did seem decent. The guy was a huge asshole, after all. Maybe he’d messed with the wrong person at his new company.

She knew only the barest possibilities of Maggie’s plan for him. She’d asked Luz many weeks ago where Tanner lived, where he worked now, what his hobbies were, anything else that might help.

Luz hadn’t known everything. The name of his new employer, sure, that had come to her through the grapevine. She knew his ex-wife’s name and where she might be living. And she knew Tanner owned his own home in Highlands Ranch and was pretty passionate about lawn maintenance and home improvement, if his preferred topics of conversation were any indication. If poisoning his beautiful lawn would have brought Luz any solace, she’d have taken care of the revenge herself. It had been her backup plan if everything else fell through.

She and Tanner were close in age, but he’d married young and had a teenage daughter. His ex-wife was permanently out of the picture. He’d called her a skank and a druggie who couldn’t hold down a job, and he’d fought hard to keep her visitation so restricted that she’d eventually stopped trying to see their daughter. Now that she knew how vengeful he was, Luz had no idea if any of that had been exaggerated to get revenge on his ex.

In the end she hadn’t felt she’d had much to pass along to Maggie, but now . . . now Tanner had lost his second job in a year. That had been Luz’s favored goal, the only revenge she could think up that didn’t involve violence. After all, his career had been his motivation for ruining Luz’s life. The punishment fit the crime in a way that pleased her perfectionist soul.

Hyperaware of how long she’d been staring at her phone, she finally set it down and looked back to the email she’d been composing.
